The Parent Practice

The Parent Practice teaches a series of valuable, easy to learn techniques to make your life as a parent more fulfilling and your children feel happier and more confident. We offer and private consultations, topic based workshops (Managing Meltdowns and Misbehaviour, Bringing Out The Best In Boys, Raising Girls) and weekly parenting skills classes. Topics covered include;

How Do We Secure Information?

We take every reasonable precaution to prevent personal information submitted by you from being accidentally lost or destroyed, or accessed by or disclosed to unauthorised third parties. Patricia is a Chartered Psychologist and has worked with children for over twenty years. After graduating in psychology she taught for a number of years before becoming fascinated in language disorder and the area of children with learning difficulties.

Working as a consulting psychologist at the Dyslexia Institute she came to realize that problems of learning how to read and spell could have their basis in physiology, nutrition and how information is processed through the senses.

Patricia is one of the founders of Space to Learn™ which was set up to explore, facilitate and help remediate learning, emotional and behavioral difficulties.

Children present at various points in the pyramid of learning and it is the focus of the team to ensure that every child is supported at each stage of their development.

Psychologists identify abilities and potential by using tests and job-relevant exercises for selection, appraisal and career counselling. They help motivate people and help assess performance both on and off the job. They can advise on stress management. They can also help people and organisations adapt to change.

An integral part of their work is in the area of Disability Discrimination and Equal Opportunities. For example an employee may have a specific learning difficulty. Investment in assessment and support is rewarded by the return of an employee working to their full potential.

Creativity and the effective use of communication models are essential tools utilised at Space To Learn.

Structure and content of courses are agreed with the client/organization.
This allows us to focus on the particular needs of the  individual and the organization..
We work with you to develop a course that targets the issues you wish to address.

STUDENTS

We assess for the Disabled Students Allowance at our base in Sanderstead or visit the College or University. The Learning Support Department and Space To Learn arrange such visits.

THE ASSESSMENT PROCESS

Psychologists work directly with children and young people. We use an approach which combines a level of testing and in-context assessment. This allows for a fair description of the child’s strengths and weaknesses underpinned by an analysis of why they are experiencing difficulties.

The use of a wide range of comprehensive testing and diagnostic assessment helps to provide recommendations for School Action/Plus of the Code of Practice.

Assistance with framing Individual Education Plans for example, specialist advice and guidance on specific disabilities and particular educational needs in relation to the Disability Discrimination Act.
School based assessments and observations can be arranged as well as inset training days for teachers.

Parents

Having a child/teenager with any sort of learning/behavioural difficulty is challenging and parents also need advice and support.

We have links to parent support groups and specialist agencies that can provide much needed advice and guidance when anxiety and worry is at its height.

Further Education and Exams

Dyslexics although often talented and creative find exam courses leading to Common Entrance, SATS, GCSEs and A levels difficult.

It is not necessary to have a Statement in order to benefit from exam concessions, but students who want to receive extra time (normally 25%) or other concessions during GCSE exams need to have an assessment made by an educational psychologist or specially qualified assessor within 2 years of the exams.

The report should be given to the school or centre where the exams are to be sat, who will then make the arrangements with the examination board.(s).
